CONTEMPORANEA
Florence Biennale Australia
CONTEMPORANEA was designed to bring together in one exhibition the Australian artists that have accepted the challenge over recent years to exhibit their works at the Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy.

The organising committee consists of Jim van Geet and me, Joy Engelman who together have worked to make this possible. Our first task was to identify the artists and bring them together under one umbrella, florencebiennaleaustralia.org A website was built as a focal point for the group and many members have already sent in their information for the site.

In early 2008, we approached the members and invited them to participate in the group show and 33 of the 60 artists responded enthusiastically, so well in fact that we ended up with over 100 paintings, all of substantial size. This led to problems in displaying them and compromises had to be made. The exhibition traveled from Melbourne to Canberra and was opened in both cities to a large crowd of art lovers.

At this stage, Jim and I are not sure whether we will go again in 2 years, but we do wish all the artists in the group every success in their respective arts practices. We also say what a wonderful diverse and adventurous group you are!
